Will my lower back pain go away on its own?

It’s highly likely it will, but any medical practitioner will tell you that your lower back pain is a self-limiting condition. It resolves on its own, but that is only half the story. 60% of first time, lower back pains recur within a year. There is three and five chance that if you’re having an episode, you will have another one within 12 months. Approximately 23% of the adult population have lower back pain. It’s affecting one in four of us, approximately every day. Those are pretty grim statistics, and they are reason that lower back pain is the single leading cause of disability in the world. This is measured by the world health organization, and many others use the term years lived with disability.

Lower back pain is not going to shorten your life. But there is a very high chance that it will cause a significant amount of disability. It’s not going to kill your lower back. Pain can have a huge impact on your life and your enjoyment of life and your ability to do things. Self-limiting is really a very benign and probably misleading term to apply to it.

Where to start with relief and prevention

This is all to do with having a good plan and sticking to it. Go back and listen to episode one through to six. That will give you a firm grounding in what the causes of lower back pain are and how to relieve and prevent it. The rest of this podcast is littered with questions that people have sent in. If you’re looking for where to start with relief and prevention, start at the beginning. Do something about it, don’t just take the pills and trust that it goes away. It might, but it may come back again.
